Jillunu Oru Kadhal (2006) songs! - my kutti review

Will these become hits? With Surya in the lead there are some chances if the movie is a hit. The songs are not exceptional even by Tamil movie standards (forget ARR's standards).

Kummi Adi seems to be catchy. It has way too many singers. Might go the way some of the Godfather songs -- unnoticed. Swarnalatha's singing seems to be "polished" or covered up with other people's singing -- was her singing that bad to make the "cover-ups"? She doesn't seem to be allowed to complete many of her lines in the song! With so many singers in the song there is no enough chance for anyone to shine through. The singing from Sivachidambharam seems interesting and has a lot of variations. Naresh Iyer puts some josh into the singing.

Mumbe vaa is a nice melody. I think Naresh Iyer's singing does not have universal appeal and that might be the biggest drawback for the song. This song has some brilliant moments but it is not going to be all time great. Shreyal's voice is amazing and she brings the right feel to the song but it shows that she is not a native tamil song.

Maaza song has too much expression and bad lyrics (beer and what not) to be likeable to everyone. SPB Charan was over-doing the drunken feel. Can't bear to have a repeat listen because of his singing. He has tried to sound like his father, but overdone it. Reminded me of an old K Baghyaraj song "ammaadi idhu thaan kaadhala". The song seems to be fit for a S.J.Surya movie not actor Surya! Maybe ARR got confused here!

Machakaari is the best of the lot. Great singing from Shankar and Vasundhara. If the picturization is any good then this song is a runaway hit. What energy!

You can easily mistake New York song to be from Rang De Basanti! Nothing new for ARR fans. Another song that will be lost. Might be talked about in a few years because ARR fans will recall this as a song sung by ARR (until another song is sung by him). The music and orchestra suggests that this can be a background song only -- the picturization can not save this song.

Maaricham is vintage ARR -- reminds you of the ARR of Thiruda Thiruda where he could surprise you with out of the world experimental songs that can still be enjoyed by everyone. Great energetic singing by Carolisa (who is she?). In the song there are some calls to "Gautham" -- is that a call to director Gautham (of Kaaka Kaaka fame) to take note of ARR? :)

Jillendru Oru Kaadhal -- ARR falls back to the Jazz era. Seems like the title song from a James Bond movie. Is this song going to be used in the titles? The singer is bad -- how many noses does this singer have? And does she know how to sing in tune? How did ARR pass this kind of singing? He could have got Mahalakshmi Iyer to sing this song -- it would have been a super hit with her singing. Tanvi should be banned from singing any more songs -- what an assault on the listeners!
